We’re excited to introduce a highly requested feature for sommeliers and wine professionals using COENA Wine List on iPad: BIN numbers are now fully supported across the admin interface, inventory tools, and data exports!
What Are BIN Numbers?
BIN stands for Bottle Identification Number, and is a system used in wine cellars to catalog each bottle with a unique reference. BINs make it easier for sommeliers to manage wine inventory, organize the cellar, and quickly locate bottles. Now, with this latest update, COENA brings that same precision and efficiency to your digital wine management experience.
Feature Overview
Here’s how the new BIN functionality works across different parts of the COENA ecosystem:
🍷 Wine Details Screen (Admin)
You can now assign a BIN number to each wine directly in the wine detail sheet. The new field is located next to the price entry, in the bottom-right section of the screen.
🔒 Note: This BIN is only visible to staff in the admin interface and inventory views by default – not to guests browsing the wine list – unless you switch this on (see below)
🧾 Wine List & Inventory Management (Admin)
-
Display: BIN numbers will appear after the appellation, separated by a dash (e.g., Chablis – B12), but only if a BIN is entered.
-
Search: You can now search wines by BIN number, making it even easier to locate specific bottles. This functionality is controlled via a new setting (see below).
-
Jeroboams and Magnums: The same logic applies to special formats like Jeroboams and Magnums.
📥 Exporting to Excel or CSV
-
When exporting your wine inventory, the BIN number will now appear as the second column.
-
Whether you export the current view or your entire list, this small but powerful addition helps keep your records organized.
⚙️ New Settings for BIN Visibility and Searchability
In the Settings screen, we’ve added a new “BIN” section with two simple switches:
-
BINs searchable
🔘 When ON, you can search wines by BIN number in both inventory and wine list (admin views).
-
BINs shown in customer wine list
🔘 When ON, BIN numbers will be displayed on the wine list visible to restaurant guests.
Both switches are OFF by default, giving you full control over how BINs are used and displayed in your wine program.
📱 Wine List for Customers (Optional)
If enabled in settings, BINs can now appear on the customer-facing wine list, displayed:
-
After the appellation on multi-line views.
-
After the domain and vintage in one-line views.
Guests can even search by BIN, just like your sommeliers – a useful touch for VIP clients or collectors.
Why This Matters
This feature was developed based on direct feedback from sommeliers using COENA in some of the world’s most refined wine programs. With BIN support, you now have:
-
Better inventory tracking
-
Improved cellar organization
-
Faster wine retrieval
-
Seamless integration with your existing workflows
